There is a laundry list of reasons why you should ride your bike instead of drive a car. Here are five of the best.
Because going green is not only on trend, it also so happens to be great for the environment. And if you’re leaving a footprint on this earth, you don’t want to leave a carbon one. Riding your bike eliminates the possibility of releasing any CO2 emissions into the air, as well as eliminates any fluids dripping from your pipes and eventually making its way from the road into your local waterways. Also, from a taxpayers perspective, (which is mostly every person on this planet), your whopping 20 pound bicycle is not wearing down the roads as quickly.
Two wheels allows for hundreds more options. Not only will sitting in traffic be a horror of the past, the paths you choose to take on your way could be endless. So you left a bit late and you have to be somewhere shortly? Hop on your bike, cut through the alley, and you made it on time, in half the time. Maybe the opposite? Feeling hungry and have time to kill? Take the scenic trail, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the the view for a little while.
Depending on the route you choose to take, and how much power is behind your ride, you can burn anywhere from 500 to 5,000 calories while on your bicycle. If you are looking to drop some LBS, you love to eat (who doesn’t?) and you don’t want to stop, (who does?) then just switch from sitting in your car, and start riding your bike. You’ll watch the pounds shed away in no time.
If you go the extra mile and get rid of your car altogether, you no longer have a car payment. No car payment, means no car insurance. With no car and no insurance to pay for, you can throw out having to spend money on gas, and maintenance costs. All of a sudden you’re rolling in the dough!
Parking can be a total nightmare of a task for multiple reasons. You all know you’ve been in that situation where you’re meeting a friend for dinner on a Friday night after work. You haven’t eaten since breakfast so you’re hungry, only to arrive frantically, a few minutes late, to zero spaces in the parking structure. That’s the moment you wish you were on your bike. You see, you can fit a dozen bicycles in one parking spot. Think about that the next time you’re hangry parking.
I understand that a lot of you work too far away from home to ride your bike, but your mom walked 5 miles uphill in the snow in her snowshoes everyday didn’t she? Ditch the car. Buy a bike.
